It started with a TV show.
An innocent childhood cartoon with mythical creatures that go by the name… Pokémon.
Nearly 20 years later it became a national obsession with the release of the ill-fated Pokémon GO.
It’s been a year since Pokémon GO swept the nation and the world has descended into chaos.
What many thought would be a passing fad, that would die out in 3 weeks, has divided the world.
We all thought that when we reached level 5 and had to choose between 3 teams that it was an innocent decision…. We were so wrong.
Soon political affiliates piggybacked on the popularity of the game by choosing Team Valor and Team Mystic to represent Democratic and Republican parties. They had no idea that the line in the sand was about to be drawn.
The first signs of the end were when Valor became territorial. Team Valor used to gather in parks around gyms and mug the kids that would show up to battle. When people gave up on the gyms Valor started jumping people that were there for the Pokéstops. After a while Valor just started setting lures to draw kids out for fun.
Team Mystic knew something had to be done. After a meet up they realised, though they did not have the strength in Pokémon, they did have the numbers in people.
That was the day it all changed….
Small fights turned into riots. Riots turned into warfare.
Team Instinct carved out their place as the arms dealers to both sides. Politicians went from trying to end the conflict to becoming a part of it. They enlisted the army to subdue the riots. But as both Mystic and Valor troops were sent to the same area things escalated. It was World War 3.
Now as I sit cowering in my fox hole, the Earth around me trembles every few moments from the bombs dropping in the sky. I can’t help but wonder if this all could have been prevented. When did we lose sight of the fact that it’s just a game?
It all started with people poaching neutral gyms. All of us trying to be the very best like no one ever was. Why couldn’t we just play fair? When did we forget that we are all just trainers, just human beings trying to exist in a world full of virtual creatures.
I don’t want to live in a Poké-pocalyptic world. I want to live in a world full of unity, peace and understanding. Come on, it’s not too late. You teach me and I’ll teach you, and together we can bring peace back to the world.
Right after I catch this Pikachu.
Gotta catch ’em all.
